OEM or ODM — which one you need
The terms get used loosely. Here is what each means when working with us.
| OEM | ODM | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | Our existing pattern, produced in your colours with your label | A new design developed from your sketch, reference images or sample |
| You provide | Colourway, label artwork, packaging spec | Sketch, reference photos or a physical sample |
| We provide | Production to your spec on a proven pattern | Pattern development, counter-sample, then production |
| Minimum | 50 pieces per design | 50 pieces per design |
| Sampling | Usually not required — the pattern is already proven | Counter-sample produced and photographed for approval first |
| Best for | Resellers building an own-brand range | Studios wanting styling nobody else in their market has |

How a custom order runs
- 1
Send the brief
A sketch, a few reference photographs or a physical sample is enough to start. Include target quantity, colours and any deadline.
- 2
We quote
Unit price at your quantity, sampling cost if required, lead time and freight. Usually within one business day.
- 3
Sample and approval
We produce and photograph a counter-sample. Nothing goes into production until you have approved it. Sampling adds 7-10 days.
- 4
Production
15-25 days. Hand-knitted work scales with quantity, so allow longer above 200 pieces.
- 5
Dispatch
Packed to your spec — polybag, hangtag, carton marking — and shipped with tracking.
What to put in your brief
You do not need all of it to start a conversation — but the more of this you send up front, the fewer rounds it takes to get to a quote.
- Reference
- A photo, sketch, mood board or physical sample. A photograph of something close is more useful than a written description.
- Quantity
- Target quantity per design, and whether this is a trial or a repeat order. Price depends on it.
- Colour
- Pantone code, a physical swatch, or a photo taken in daylight. Screenshots of colours are unreliable.
- Size
- Newborn, sitter, or specific dimensions. For props, the internal dimension the baby sits in matters more than the outside.
- Labelling
- Whether you need your own label, hangtag, polybag print or carton marking — and artwork if you have it.
- Deadline
- When you need it in hand, not when you need it shipped. We work backwards from that.
Materials we work in
- Wool, mohair, cotton and acrylic blends for knitted work
- Stretch knit, mesh, lace and wool felt for textiles
- Pine and reclaimed-look wood for posing pieces
- Powder-coated iron for buckets, beds and chairs
- Rattan and natural fibre for baskets
- Fabric and silk florals — not fresh flowers, which do not survive studio lighting
Why studios commission their own designs
If three studios in a city all shoot the same floral newborn set, none of them stands out — parents compare portfolios that look interchangeable and choose on price. A studio with styling nobody else in its market can offer competes on the work instead.
That is the main reason our custom orders come from studios rather than resellers: an exclusive colourway or an original scene concept is a marketing asset, not just an inventory decision. Resellers use the same capability differently, putting their own label on our existing patterns to build an own-brand range.
Custom production FAQ
What is the difference between OEM and ODM here?
OEM means we produce one of our existing patterns in your colours with your label and packaging. ODM means we develop a new design from your sketch, reference images or physical sample. OEM starts at 50 pieces per design; ODM also starts at 50 pieces but includes a sampling round first.
How long does custom production take?
15-25 days for production, plus 7-10 days for sampling where a sample is required. Hand-knitted pieces scale with quantity, so allow longer above 200 pieces.
Do you charge for samples?
Sample cost is quoted per project and is normally credited against the main order once production is confirmed.
Can you work from a photograph rather than a technical drawing?
Yes. Most of our custom work starts from reference photographs or a mood board. We produce and photograph a counter-sample so you can approve the interpretation before we commit to a run.
Will you produce a design exclusively for us?
Exclusivity is negotiable per project and depends on volume. Tell us what you have in mind when you send the brief.
Can I customise just the colour of something in your catalogue?
Yes, and it is the most common request. Dye-to-reference on an existing design runs from 30 pieces per colour — no pattern development needed, so it is faster and cheaper than a new design.
